Find your Moon sign, nakshatra and pada

In Vedic astrology your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at the moment of birth, and the nakshatra is a finer 27-part division of that same position. The Moon moves about 0.55 degrees per hour, so the exact birth time matters.

Defaults to your device time zone. The local clock time and that day's rules (such as daylight saving) are applied from your browser's time zone database.

How it is calculated

The Moon's apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude (true equinox of date) comes from the astronomy-engine library (MIT license). The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa uses the linear formula 23°51′25.5″ at J2000 plus 50.29″ per year. Sidereal longitude = tropical longitude minus ayanamsa. The formula is kept to birth dates from 1900 to 2035. Sample dates were compared with a published panchang (drikpanchang.com) and showed no difference in rashi, nakshatra or pada.

How Korean Saju reads the same birth data: Vedic astrology takes the Moon's sidereal position at birth and gives one sign and one nakshatra. Korean Saju (Four Pillars) does not read the Moon's position: it converts the birth year, month, day and hour into 8 characters (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) and reads the balance of the Five Elements and the Day Master.

This tool is for education and personal reflection. The calculation uses astronomy-engine (MIT license) and a linear Lahiri ayanamsa formula; other sites may use a different ayanamsa or rounding and can show a different result near a boundary. It is not a prediction and does not replace professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Moon sign (Rashi) and the nakshatra?

The Moon sign is the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon was in at your birth; there are 12 signs of 30 degrees each. A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the zodiac, each 13°20′ wide, and every nakshatra has 4 padas of 3°20′.

Which ayanamsa and calculation does this calculator use?

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa: 23°51′25.5″ at J2000 plus 50.29″ per year. The Moon's tropical longitude comes from astronomy-engine (MIT license), and sidereal longitude = tropical minus ayanamsa. The formula is kept to dates between 1900 and 2035.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. The Moon moves about 0.55 degrees per hour, so roughly six hours of difference can shift it by one pada (3°20′). With an approximate time the sign, nakshatra or pada can change. When the Moon is within 0.1 degrees of a boundary, this page shows a warning itself.

Why does another site show a different result?

Three causes are possible: the Moon is very close to a sign, nakshatra or pada boundary; the other site uses a different ayanamsa version (some software uses an older one that is about 0.015 degrees lower); or a different birth time zone was chosen.

How does Korean Saju read the same birth data?

Korean Saju (Four Pillars) does not read the Moon's position. It converts the birth year, month, day and hour into 8 characters (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) and reads the balance of the Five Elements and the Day Master.
