How to locate, read, and apply the spouse indicator in your four-pillar chart
In BaZi and Korean Saju, the element a man’s Day Master conquers becomes his Wealth Star (재성) — which doubles as his wife or partner indicator. The element that conquers a woman’s Day Master becomes her Officer Star (관성) — her husband or partner indicator. Both genders additionally read the Day Branch (Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar) as the Spouse Palace (배우자궁), which describes the quality and environment of the marriage bond itself.
BaZi assigns each of the Ten Gods (십성, 十神) according to the structural relationship between an element and the Day Master. The spouse-star split is rooted in classical Chinese cosmological logic: the thing a person controls is subordinate to them, and the thing that controls a person is dominant over them. Historically, these two poles were mapped to the husband–wife dynamic. The practical consequence is that the same element can be a man’s wife star and a woman’s career-pressure star, depending on whose chart is being read.
The Korean Saju terms mirror the classical Chinese names:
Contemporary practice applies the same structural logic across all relationship types, treating the spouse indicator as the element in the chart that occupies the “controlling” role relative to the person’s Day Master polarity.
The five-element control cycle (相剋 xiāngkè) determines which element is whose Wealth or Officer Star. Every element conquers exactly one other:
| Conquering element | Conquered element | Mnemonic |
|---|---|---|
| Wood (甲 Jiǎ • 乙 Yǐ) | Earth (戊 Wù • 己 Jǐ) | Tree roots break and bind soil |
| Fire (丙 Bǐng • 丁 Dīng) | Metal (庚 Gēng • 辛 Xīn) | Fire smelts and reshapes metal |
| Earth (戊 Wù • 己 Jǐ) | Water (壬 Rén • 癸 Guǐ) | Earthen banks dam flowing water |
| Metal (庚 Gēng • 辛 Xīn) | Wood (甲 Jiǎ • 乙 Yǐ) | Metal axe fells timber |
| Water (壬 Rén • 癸 Guǐ) | Fire (丙 Bǐng • 丁 Dīng) | Water extinguishes flame |
Find your Day Master (the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar), then read across. Any stem or branch in your chart that matches the spouse-star element is part of your spouse indicator. The polarity variant (opposite = Direct; same = Indirect / Seven Killings) is explained in the next section.
| Day Master | Element & Polarity | Men — Direct Wealth (정재) | Men — Indirect Wealth (편재) | Women — Direct Officer (정관) | Women — Seven Killings (칠살) |

| 甲 Jiǎ | Yang Wood | 己 Jǐ (Yin Earth) | 戊 Wù (Yang Earth) | 辛 Xīn (Yin Metal) | 庚 Gēng (Yang Metal) |

The rule: Direct (正) = opposite polarity; Indirect / Seven Killings (偏 / 殺) = same polarity as the Day Master.
Knowing which variant appears in the chart adds a layer of qualitative meaning. The two variants for each gender are not ranked — both can describe excellent partnerships when properly supported.
For Men
Direct Wealth (正財 / 정재): Opposite-polarity stem. Classically associated with a committed, settled relationship — steady affection, clear boundaries, preference for formal partnership.
Indirect Wealth (偏財 / 편재): Same-polarity stem. Often read as a more dynamic, socially expressive partner — or a relationship that develops outside conventional structures. Multiple Indirect Wealth stems can complicate commitment.
For Women
Direct Officer (正官 / 정관): Opposite-polarity stem. Suggests a reliable, publicly proper partner who respects social norms and family structure.
Seven Killings (七殺 / 칠살): Same-polarity stem. Points to a driven, forceful, or unconventional partner. A Resource Star (인성/印星) in the chart “tames” the Killings energy and is considered the classic configuration for a high-achieving husband with strong character.
The Earthly Branch directly beneath the Day Master — the Day Branch — is called the Spouse Palace (配偶宮 / 배우자궁). It operates as a second lens on the marriage: where the Spouse Star describes the partner’s nature and timing, the Spouse Palace describes the environment and quality of the marriage relationship itself.
Locating the Spouse Star is only the first step. A practitioner evaluates its condition before drawing conclusions about relationship quality or timing.
Interactions that weaken the Spouse Star — a clash (沖), piercing (穿), or excessive control by another star — can indicate periods of relational difficulty rather than a permanent prognosis.
No instances of the spouse-element in the natal chart does not predict lifelong singleness. The star frequently enters through the Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar: when the active time cycle introduces the Spouse Star element, marriage opportunity opens. Many people with no natal Spouse Star marry later in life during a favourable Luck Pillar decade.
One clear Spouse Star, well-rooted and unclashed, is classically the most favourable configuration — focused, stable relationship energy without scattering.
For men, multiple Wealth Stars can scatter the partner energy across relationships or indicate financial complexity entangled with romance. For women, multiple Officer or Seven Killings stems intensify the controlling dynamic — associated with demanding partnership circumstances or multiple significant relationships. The surrounding chart structures and Luck Pillar context determine which interpretation applies.
BaZi treats marriage as a time-cycle event, not solely a natal-chart feature. The three primary timing signals are:
A year when the Annual Branch forms a six-harmony combination (六合) with the natal Day Branch is one of the most frequently observed marriage-year patterns across classical Korean Saju analysis.

In BaZi and Korean Saju, each of the Ten Gods (십성, 十神) corresponds to a life domain. The element the Day Master conquers is the Wealth Star — for men this also represents the wife or romantic partner. The element that conquers the Day Master is the Officer Star — for women this represents the husband. The assignment reflects classical cosmology where the controlling relationship symbolises the spousal bond.
A man identifies his Day Master stem, then locates the element it overcomes in the five-element cycle (Wood → Earth, Fire → Metal, Earth → Water, Metal → Wood, Water → Fire). Any Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch in his chart belonging to that conquered element is his Wealth Star. Opposite-polarity stem = Direct Wealth (정재); same-polarity stem = Indirect Wealth (편재).
A woman finds the element that overcomes her Day Master in the same five-element cycle. Stems or branches belonging to that controlling element are her Officer Star. Opposite polarity = Direct Officer (정관), describing a steady supportive partner. Same polarity = Seven Killings (칠살), describing a forceful or driven partner — particularly effective when a Resource Star (인성) is also present in the chart.
The Day Branch is the Spouse Palace (배우자궁). It reflects the environment and quality of the marriage relationship. A clash between the Day Branch and the Annual or Luck Branch signals a turbulent period. A six-harmony combination with the Annual Branch is one of the most common marriage-year triggers. If the Day Branch’s hidden stem matches the Spouse Star element, the marriage bond is considered deeply rooted.
Absence of the Spouse Star in the natal pillars does not indicate permanent singleness. The star often arrives through the Luck Pillar decade or Annual Pillar year, opening a marriage window at that specific time. A complete reading evaluates the natal chart and all active time cycles together before drawing any conclusions about marriage prospects.
Neither is inherently better. Direct Officer (正官/정관) describes a reliable, socially conventional partner. Seven Killings (七殺/칠살) describes a driven, high-energy partner whose qualities are most constructive when a Resource Star (인성) in the chart channels that intensity. A strong Seven Killings tamed by a Resource Star is a classical marker for an ambitious, high-achieving husband. The Day Master’s own strength and the active Luck Pillar context matter more than which variant appears alone.
